AUGUST 29, 2000

A tribunal of military judges on Monday overturned the life sentence of former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student Lori Berenson, who was convicted of helping the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement plan an attack on Peru's Congress.

The American citizen has been imprisoned since 1996 on charges that she aided the rebels in their failed attack. The movement is named for Tupac Amaru, an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s.

Berenson will now have a civilian trial.
