JUNE 6, 2001

Mayans from the highlands of Guatemala today will file a lawsuit against a top political official for the destruction of 11 Indian villages in the early 1980s.

The group says Efrain Rios Montt, who is currently head of Guatemala's Congress, participated in racial extermination of Native peoples when he was dictator. More than 200,000 people died during the nation's bloody 36-year civil war, most of the Mayan.
