While in New York on Monday, Alejandro Toledo, President-elect of Peru, said he will not intervene in the case of Lori Berenson, who was convicted by a civilian court in Peru last week.

Berenson, a former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student, was convicted of aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in a failed plot to take over Congress. The movement is named for Tupac Amaru, an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s.
