Toledo has no comment on convicted American

JUNE 22, 2001 An aide for Alejandro Toledo said the incoming President of Peru has no comment on the conviction of former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student Lori Berenson. Toledo could pardon Berenson. But during his campaign against ousted President Alberto Fujimori, he suggested he would not do so after being accused of being soft on crime. Berenson, 31, was convicted of aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in a failed plot to take over Congress. The movement is named for Tupac Amaru, an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s. In an exclusive interview with the Associated Press, Berenson said she was sorry for the pain cuased her family. Get the Story:
