Guilty verdict seen for American in Peru

JUNE 18, 2001

A court in Peru is expected on Wednesday to convict former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student Lori Berenson of aiding an insurgent military group in their failed attempt to take over Congress.

Berenson was convicted by a secret military court in 1996 of treason. That conviction was overturned and a new civilian trial on charges of terrorism ended last week. She will be able to make one least plea before a verdict is handed down.

Berenson is accused of helping the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement in the attack. The movement is named for Tupac Amaru, an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s.
