Rebels reject chiefs' plan

MAY 26, 2000 George Speight, Indigenous Fiji Businessman turned Rebel Leader, rejected a proposal from 40-member Great Council of Chiefs on Wednesday. The Chiefs' plan called for removal of the 30 hostages and the institution of a caretaker government that would implement a new consitution giving more power to the indigenous Fijians. The plan also called for prosecution of Speight and his associates, but the rebels and their leader would be pardoned once they released the hostages and their arms. An official with Speight's new government claim that this plan has only escalated the conflict. Get the Story:
