MAY 25, 2001 Peru's Attorney General Nelly Calderon on Thursday confirmed she has asked Congress to charge deposed President Alberto Fujimori on human rights charges stemming from a 1991 massacre. The killings of 15 persons suspected of being affiliated with the Shining Path rebel movement was orchestrated by formy spy chief and Fujimori right hand man Vladimiro Montesinoss, say human rights groups. Fujimori is alleged to have fiven the orders to carry out the massacre. Fujimori left the country last year for Japan, the birthplace of his parents, and declared he was stepping down as President. Congress rejected his resignation and voted to oust him instead. Japan has recognized Fujimori's citizenship. But the country has no extradition treaty with Peru, so a return of Fujimori to face any charges is unlikely. Elections for Fujimori's replacement are scheduled for June 3. Alejandro Toledo, who hopes to be the nation's first Indian leader in modern times, is leading in polls against challenge and former President Alan Garcia. Toledo has been ordered to court by a judge in Piura to answer to a paternity suit. Lucrecia Orozco alleges Toledo is the father of her daughter Zarai, age 13. Get the Story:
