Eight Indian farmers were killed in the Mexican state of Chiapas, said local officials on Friday.

The victims were members of a group formerly allied with the Institutional Revolutionary Party. The party has been accused of working with para-military groups who have attacked Indian villages.

Governor Pablo Salazar said the dispute wasn't based on land ownership.
