JANUARY 30, 2001

In his first interview with an American newspaper in four years, the leader of the Zapatista Indian rights movement in Mexico said the group's primary goal is peace and equal rights for the nation's indigenous people.

Subcommander Marcos said he is optimistic about working with Mexico's new President Vicente Fox, who has closed several Army bases in the southern state of Chiapas and has submitted a long delayed Indian rights bill to Congress. But he also said he is worried about political factor which may prevent some of their goals from being realized.

Marcos and the Zapatista rebels are planning to march to Mexico City beginning next month in preparation to meet with Fox and make an address Congress.
