The Mexican government on Wednesday closed an army base in the southern state of Chiapas as part of promises made to leaders of an Indian-rights movement there.

Renewed negotiations with the Zapatista rebels and the government are expected to begin in March, when the leader and other supporters will complete their march to Mexico City.
