Taliban bin Laden defiant

MONDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2001

Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, Taliban's ambassador to Pakistan, said today that the United States will not succeed in its attack on Afghanistan.

Zaeef said the Afghan people are ready to stand against the United States no matter what the cost. He said Taliban forces shot down a plane, a claim disputed by the Pentagon.

In a pre-taped segment broadcast on Middle Eastern satellite television after the strikes began, Osama bin Laden, the suspected mastermind of September 11's terrorist attacks, also remained defiant of the U.S. He praised the hijackers who took out the World Trade Center and hit the Pentagon, but claimed no responsibility.

The Defense Department said bin Laden was not specifically targeted in the first three waves because his exact location is not known.

Pakistan is the only country to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
