The Taliban have reported they captured a rival tribal leader and executed him for spying on behalf of the United States.

Abdul Haq allegedly snuck into Afghanistan from Pakistan last weekend. The Taliban said they captured him on Thursday, put him on trial and then executed him.

Haq was a former military commander who fought the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan during the 1980s. After that occupation was repelled, the Taliban took over.

Haq was allied with the ousted Afghan king and reportedly disappointed the U.S. has not been more active in helping Uzbek, Tajik and other tribal groups fight the Taliban.
