FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means its time for the weekly list of who were the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Students at Chichiltah School in New Mexico - For finally getting online. Now you can log onto Indianz.Com!

ABC's Connie Chung - For scoring an interview with Rep. Gary Condit (R-Calif.). Too bad he didn't answer any of your most pressing questions.

Alaska Native Corporations - For getting $39 million for more than 200,000 acres of disputed land said worth just $5 million. And for retaining rights to much of it. Can we hire your lawyers?

Oglala Lakota President Harold Salway - For surviving the take-over of tribal offices and for being awarded back pay. That ride of yours sure must be nice.

Common Sense and Decency - For knowing that Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) won't seek re-election.

The Losers
The Department of Interior - Why not?

Interior solicitors and senior managers - For possibly facing a probe on the trust fund.

North Carolina lawmaker Don Davis - For giving a weak apology for a racist e-mail you sent out to your colleagues.

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences - For moving the Latin GRAMMYs from Miami to Los Angeles. We guess Latin people are nice when they aren't protesting.

In The Middle
Citizen Pot Chairman John A. "Rocky" Barrett - For losing your title (and $73,000) salary as tribal administration but vowing to keep doing the job anyway. We're sure you'll find a way around the little snafu, though.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation - You're offering to limit land-into-trust applications, sign away some of your sovereign immunity and pay your biggest critics. Yet its still not enough. At least your pow-wow has started.

Jim Thorpe - Do you belong in Pennsylvania? Or Oklahoma? Put it this way: at least you're not in England.
