In The Hoop
FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 2001

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means its time for the weekly list of who were the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Indigenous People - Instead of taking it to the streets, they are taking it to the United Nations. We hope someone's listening.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb - For making it through your first appearance on Native America Calling. When are you going on Oprah?

Inupiat Eskimos - It turns out you oppose drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Or so Neal McCaleb seemed to say this week on NAC.

New Mexico - For managing to "settle" a lawsuit with tribes without giving up much. Thanks, Tia Patricia!

Former BIA CIO Dom Nessi - It looks like you got out just in time. But not in time to avoid those court depositions. We wonder what your new bosses at the National Park Service think.

Exercise - For helping reduce diabetes. Will we start seeing rezercise videos now? Call up Apache comedian Drew Lacapa!

John Potter - For falling in love. Why weren't we invited to the wedding? We would have brought fry bread mix.

Stem Cells - For receiving federal funding, if only just a few of you.

Indianz.Com - For being exclusive.

The Losers
The Department of Interior - Oh, why even bother.

BIA Deputy Commissioner Sharon Blackwell - For being an overzealous editor. Go a little easy on the cut & paste in the future.

VCAT - First restructuring, then refocusing, then suspending, now delisting. We just hope you paid your bill to the NewsDude.

New Mexico Tribes - For protesting all those payments but paying them anyway. What a great settlement. Thanks Uncle Wif!

Wampanoag Tribal Members - For not being invited, allegedly, to your own tribe's press conference.

Connecticut - For turning out questionable Democrats. First Blumy, now Benedict.

The Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe - For not loving your fellow man. Can't we all just get along?

In The Middle
Pojoaque Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Nation - For still holding out. But will the state try to shut you down?

Alaska Natives - For not knowing if Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) will run for Governor. Terror awaits.

Jamul Indian Village - For having a name crisis. In lobbying records, you prefer Ewiaapaayp. In press, you prefer Jamul. Let's call the whole thing off.

Eagles - Are you still good enough to be protected? Only the 10th Circuit knows.
