In The Hoop
FRIDAY, JULY 5, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Montie R. Deer - You finally won a round in court. It must have been those high-powered Department of Justice attorneys who kicked butt on the Cobell case.

Warm Springs Tribes - Congratulations on your belated win on an old breach of trust. Let's hope the Bush administration doesn't try some monkey business now.

Leonard Gregg - Indians were almost "there" but now you set us five steps back! We just wish the white lady who allegedly started the other fire was treated the same.

Eastern Pequot Tribe - Just because! You got Blumy, Rob Simmons and a host of other shaking in their pants. We can't wait to see how they act when your federal status is actually finalized.

The Losers
Department of Interior - Historical what? Guess that "long overdue" plan Secretary Gale Norton promised Indian Country will be long overdue.

President Bush - If only your comments about holding businesses accountable applied to the management of Indian trust.

Multimedia Games Inc. - Guess Liz Homer won't be your "savior" after all. She's still a diva to us.

Tar Creek - Will Neal McCaleb try and get funding to clean up huge piles of waste in his backyard? Or will it take a lawsuit to force action? Don't count on either any time soon.

In The Middle
Chickasaw Nation - Congratulations on your new land purchase. Too bad you can't get a Bureau of Indian Affairs area director to take it into trust immediately like the good ole days.

Vision Quests, Sweat Lodges, Sun Dances, Etc. - It's been a bad couple of weeks for ceremonies. We don't know what this means but it doesn't look good.

Trust Reform Task Force - You've fallen out of favor. It might take a brawl with Ross Swimmer to bring you back.

DOI Computers - Seven months later and you still aren't fixed. We want our check!
