Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
So who were this week's movers and shakers? Its time once again for In The Hoop's take on the winners and losers in news, politics, and beyond.

The Winners
The State of Nevada - For finally proving that tribal court don't have authority over your officials. Thanks a lot Supreme Court!

Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor - For working that wonderful magic to defend tribes. Now why can't you do that more often?

The Battle of Little Bighorn - For grabbing all the media attention this week. Will this make Congress finally pay for an Indian memorial?

Independent Native News - For getting top honors from your peers at the Native American Journalists Association. Hopefully, we'll see some faster downloads from your web site now. Congratulations!

The Great Lakes - For being saved (for now) from oil drilling by the House White people are so thoughtful.

American Indians - For being such good mascots. Now stop whining.

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation - For taking one small step for car tags, one giant leap for tribal sovereignty.

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska - For getting that IHS hospital and having a treaty lawsuit against you dismissed. Some tribes have all the luck.

The Losers
Tribal Sovereignty - For proving you exist to every court except the highest one. Why even bother now?

Neal McCaleb - For still not being confirmed by the Senate. Wasn't the power shift supposed to be a good thing for Indian Country?

Subsistence Rights - For losing out to sports fisherman, tourists and others now that the government has ruled you don't get priority in the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.

The White House - For apologizing too little too late. First, you removed Indians. Who's next? White reporters?

Indian Country - For losing a Makah elder and a Northern Cheyenne pioneer.

Seminole Chief Jerry Haney - For being suspended by your tribe. But will you drop your lawsuit like another famous semi-famous suspended Seminole?

In The Middle
Indian Women - For getting your hopes up now that Ben Bratt and Julia Roberts have broken up only to see that he'll probably just date another White woman.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut - For prevailing in appeals court over land-into-trust. So why are you neighbors still making their same tired arguments that failed last year?
