Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

Courtroom Appearances
Guess who has been sauntering into the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth as of late, looking like he knows something?

None other than that embattled Department of Justice attorney Matt Fader.

After being conspicuously absent from proceedings, pleadings and preachings following his credibility testing experience two weeks ago, the young buck has resurfaced. Apparently, he's still helping the Department of Interior figure out the definition of "individual Indian trust data," which means it might take weeks before the Integrated Records Management System (IRMS) is back up and sending out oil and gas checks to individual Indians.

Barroom Appearances
Word around the Beltway is that a certain government official who is in charge of trust is also in charge of the toss pot. Showing up to meetings with face full of red and force rank with ribaldry, this jiggery ole soul has been spreading all sorts of charm and comtation just in time for the busy Holiday season.

Mall Appearances
Looking disheveled and dejected, a certain government official was spotted at a suburban Washington, D.C., shopping center recently, watching the time go by almost as quickly as Indian Country saw crucial funds disappear on such information technology advances as compact discs and sportswear.

Look for this official to show up in a different venue very soon, looking more disappointed as he takes the fifth and his toothbrush to a jail cell near you.

From Us to You: Holiday Gift Giving
Secretary of Interior Gale Norton may be the Grinch who stole consultation, in the words of tribal chairman Tex Hall, but that doesn't mean the holiday spirit is gone in Indian Country.

So if you have a gift you'd like to give to a particular government officials, Indian Country personality or some other Native of Note, email In the Hoop and let us know! We'll compile your suggestions and we'll also be passing out presents of our own.
