In The Hoop
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2001

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth - In The Hoop only has three words for you: Fab-u-lous.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) - For sticking to your opposition of a proposed gold mine on land sacred to the Quechan Tribe. Take the gloves off, sister, and let the fight begin!

Hal Stratton - For being picked to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission. And for being the second Native American -- he's Cherokee [thanks K.Go] -- nominated for a top-level position by President Bush. Now save those kids!

Jimi Hendrix's old home - For being saved from destruction by a developer. We only wish Jimi were still around to see it.

The Losers
Secretary of Interior Gale Norton - Four words: con-temp-tu-ous.

Deputy Secretary of Interior J. Steven Griles - For sending, allegedly, a court order out to 11,000 Bureau of Indian Affairs and Office of Special Trustee employees that could have been tainted with anthrax. Smallpox blankets, anyone?

The Department of Interior - For telling trust beneficiaries to "wait" to see who is in charge of trust reform. Why hasn't that been evident for the past two and one-half years?

Department of Justice - For assigning new lawyers to the trust fund defense that don't appear to be doing a better job than the old bunch.

In The Middle
EPA Chief Christie Whitman - For upholding a strict arsenic in water standard. But will you live down the damage it caused earlier this year?

The Santee Sioux Tribe - For adhering to the government's orders but still having them come after you. Is there no justice in this world?

Conroy Chino - Sure, you've been laid off. Look at it as an opportunity to be a stand-up comedian. But please, no Muslim jokes -- your NAMMY performance verged on prejudice.

White Cops - For asking to be punished through a sentencing circle. You'll end up being forced to walk home in sub-zero degree weather without a jacket too. Now that's justice.
