In The Hoop
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond. The Winners
Idaho Tribes - Congratulations on your decisive win at the polls! And it didn't cost $20 million. Indian Voters - You turned out in record numbers despite a scandal over voter registration. The candidates who owe their narrow victories to you owe you big time. Chickasaw Nation - This week you got your man in Congress, Tom Cole who told everything about his life history in his ads except that he was Chickasaw. And next week, you will have a man in space. We guess it really pays to be a Chickasaw! Michael J. Thomas - Everyone's expecting big things from you as chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. We hope you live up to all of them. The Losers
Gale Norton - You may have been out campaigning for the past month but that hasn't stopped your bad proposals, horrible legal strategies and attempts to limit Indian rights. Can we impeach you? Indian Rights - Expect even more attacks on you now that Bush has allies in the Senate. Kelsey Begaye - Out of office after only one term. Even you couldn't beat the oust tribal leaders trend. Democrats - K.Go said you didn't have an agenda. As far as we know, no one did! In The Middle
Joe Shirley - A major upset for the Navajo Nation. We hope you don't drop the ball on your predecessor's Supreme Court and Indian trust efforts. Arizona Tribes - Victory is near on your mega-million casino initiative. If all else fails, there's always Janet Napolitano. And a return to the State Legislature. And . . . Oklahoma Tribes - Will you finally get Class III gaming now that Brad Henry is headed to the Statehouse? Only time, and more campaign contributions, will tell! The Grand Ole Party - You're back in charge. But what will you do for Indian people now? It better be good or we'll take a contract out on you. In Your Hoop
