The number of people being treated for depression has increased three-fold in the past decade, according to a study by a group of health researchers at educational institutions.

Between 1987 and 1997, the percentage of Americans being treated for depression grew from 0.7 percent to 2.3 percent, according to the study. Medicines, such as Prozac, were prescribed to about a third of the patients in 1987 then increased to almost three-quarters a decade later.

The researchers said depression cuts across racial, ethnic, social and economic boundaries.
