IHS hires disciplined doctors

TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002

The Indian Health Service has knowingly hired doctors who have been disciplined or who are sex offenders, according to an Associated Press review.

In the cases reported by the AP, the doctors say IHS knew of their prior suspensions. At least 21 doctors who worked for the IHS between 1996 and 2001 have had some form of disciplinary action, according to the AP.

A federal law prohibits persons with a criminal past from working for agencies that provide services to American Indians. A federal appeals court upheld the law last year, saying it was designed to protect abuses of Natives.
