Companies agree to arsenic phaseout

Facing several class action lawsuits, a group of companies on Tuesday agreed to a two-year phaseout of arsenic in wood products.

An arsenic-based preservative is used by the timber and building industry. Arsenic can cause cancer, the Environmental Protection Agency is investigating whether products containing the preservative contribute to a higher risk in children.
