Alaska fighting fetal alcohol syndrome

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2001 The state of Alaska held its fifth annual Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Summit in Anchorage on Thursday. At the conference, Gov. Tony Knowles (D) said he was requesting $7.8 million in the state's budget to fight alcohol-related disorders. Additionally, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) has secured $30 million over five years for the problem. Alaska Natives have a disproportionately high rate of FAS births. Nearly five out of every 1,000 have FAS.
