THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 Research published in today's issue of New England Journal of Medicine blames bone loss in young women on the use of asthma inhalers. According to a study at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital, three group of women who used inhaled steroids showed a yearly decrease in bone density in the hip. Higher dosages showed higher bone loss. Although men were not studied, researchers expected the results to be the same. Asthma sufferers who use inhalers should try lower doses and have their bone density checked, said a doctor. Steroids taken in pill form have previously been linked to bone density loss.
