The existing stem cells for which President Bush has approved for study using federal funds have a flaw which may affect their viability.

The human cell colonies have been mixed with mouse cells. Mouse cells were injected to help the human cells remain healthy but they pose the risk of transferring deadly animal viruses to humans.

Existing federal regulations impose stricter limits when animal cells are involved.

Since Bush's August 9 decision to allow federal funds for the existing 60 or so stem lines, there have been numerous questions raised. The Bush administration is promising to answer them all with the development of a formal policy.
