Under federal law, a total of $100 million is available to tribes until 2003 to help fight growing rates of diabetes.

The amount is an increase from the $30 million that tribes were getting under the 1997 Balanced Budget Act. Last year, Congress increased the amount for Indian Country.

Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) on Sunday spoke before the Association of American Indian Physicians. He urged doctors to combat the diabetes epidemic.

"As Indian physicians, you are on the frontier of a very important battle. If we don't win this battle, thousands of American Indian lives will be lost to diabetes. Tribes like the Navajos, the Zunis, and the Pima Indians of Arizona will see their numbers diminish drastically," he said.

Domenici wants $4 million for he National Diabetes Prevention Center in Gallup which focuses on diabetes prevention and treatment of Native Americans.
