WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2001

About 20 percent of high school girls ages 14 to 18 say they have experience abuse on a date, according to a study published today in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

The number mirrors a recent federal survey in which 25 percent of adult women said they had been victimized by an intimate partner. The girls in today's study reported being hit, slapped, shoved or forced into sexual activity by a dating partner.

American Indian and Alaska Native women have the highest rate of domestic violence in the nation.
