Vatican opposed to any embryo use

THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2001 Hoping to dispel any notion that it meant otherwise, the Vatican on Thursday said Pope John Paul II is opposed to the use of embryos for any purpose. After meeting with President Bush on Monday, the Pope issued a statement condemning the use of embryos in scientific research. Members of Bush's staff said they took the statement to mean the Pope might not oppose using embryos created from in vitro fertlization instead of the creation of embryos to use in stem cell research. But the Vatican said any and all embryo use is wrong. Bush is considering whether federal funds should be used in stem cell research. Get the Story:
