JUNE 12, 2001 Oglala Lakota President John Yellow Bird Steele on Monday asked for Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns' help in building a nursing home for tribal elders on land the tribe owns in the state. Steele said the tribe is willing to build, staff, and run the the home if Nebraska administers Medicare payments. Johanns is reported to have reacted favorably to the proposal. The tribe owns about 600 acres in Nebraska, said Steele. The tribe's reservation in located in South Dakota, near the Nebraska border. Get the Story:
