Dakota Sioux tribal members and residents of New Ulm this week will participate in a conference aimed at fighting diabetes, which kills American Indians in Minnesota at a rate almost five times that of whites.

New Ulm has special significance because conflicts there in 1862 began the Dakota War.

Members of various Dakota tribe and descendants of German settlers will visit sacred sites, hold prayers, and attend celebrations.
