Factors contribute to women smoking

MAY 15, 2001 Economic disadvantage, low prices, and cultural respect for tobacco help contribute to Native women being the heaviest smokers in the country, says a medical officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. American Indian women in the Plains are among the heaviest users of tobacco, according to recent statistics. Alaska Native women also have high rates. Overall, 35 percent of Native women reported smoking, followed by 24 percent of Whites, 22 percent of African-Americans, 14 percent of Hispanics, and 11 percent of Asian-Americans. Get the Story:
