At a budget hearing on Thursday, Attorney General John Ashcroft said he won't be asking Congress for additional funds to settle the government's landmark lawsuit against tobacco companies.

Department of Justice lawyers, however, are worried Ashcroft will drop the suit, which he opposed as a Senator, or reassign them to other areas. Ashcrof yesterday said he hasn't yet made a decision on the suit.
