Native health funding would be cut

APRIL 2, 2001

Citing increases in federal funding, the Alaska Legislature is proposing to cut $10.5 million in health and social services funding to Alaska Natives.

Instead, Native villages and organizations would have to compete with non-Native groups for funding. And since the overall budget of the Department of Health and Social Services will be increased, the Senate subcommittee overseeing funds says Native groups won't be losing any money.

But Alaska Natives say funding for social services, public health, and drug and alcohol grans is being cut because money is being shifted to other programs.
