JANUARY 26, 2001 Scientific research groups fear President George W. Bush will extend his ban on overseas abortion funding to programs affecting federal funds for fetal tissue and embryo cell research. Bush may also re-consider the Food and Drug Administration approval of the controversial abortion drug RU-486. Approval for the drug came last fall after a 12-year review period. Meanwhile, some are saying Bush's ban on international aid for abortion service or support programs won't have much effect on foreign abortions because its unclear if such funding ever had an effect on abortions overseas.
