DECEMBER 6, 2000

Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith on Tuesday said the Oklahoma tribe has had to resort to rationing its health care due to lack of federal funds.

The tribe has consistently complained of underfunding for its health care facilities. Smith says the average yearly funding provided by the Indian Health Service for patients is $1,351. But in Oklahoma, Smith says the average is $856.
