As alternative medicines have become more attractive to Western science, it was only a matter of time before doctors embraced Native American cultural traditions.

Dr. Michael Samuels says he's a modern-day shaman and considers himself a healer. He works with plants, objects, and even dons a bear suit in helping treat his patients.

The bear is Samuels own spirit animal. His patients say he has helped them overcome their ailments using his non-Western methods.

ABCNews says Samuels worked on the "Hopi-Navaho" reservation in the 1960s.
