In order to warn consumers about the risk of salmonella, the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday ordered all egg cartons to be printed with a warning about the potentially deadly bacteria.

Manufacturers will have nine months to add this warning to their cartons: "To prevent illness from bacteria: Keep eggs refrigerated, cook eggs until yolks are firm, and cook foods containing eggs thoroughly.

In addition to cooking eggs thoroughly, foods made with eggs or food products containing eggs should always be refrigerated, says the FDA. Powwows, Pueblo feasts, and other family gatherings have occasionally been ruined thanks to contaminated potato salad, say Indian Country cooks.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting.
