New rules proposed for biotech foods

JANUARY 18, 2001

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday proposed new rules affecting the labelling of biotech food products.

Although the rules mostly fall in line with industry standards, some some say they don't go far enough in assuring the public of safety issues that were raised this past fall after corn crops were destroyed and products were recalled when an unapproved genetically engineered product was found in the food supply.

That food product, called StarLink, was again found in product sent to Japan. StarLink is not approved for export.
