WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2001

The $345 billion defense spending bill approved by the Senate on Tuesday includes $655 million to pay victims of radiation exposure.

Some of the funds would go to uranium miners and downwinders in the Four Corners area. Many of the miners and victims are Navajo.

A number have died because the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act program ran out of money. The bill earmarks $172 million for RECA.
