Prisons go vegetarian

OCTOBER 27, 2000

The US Bureau of Prisons will begin offering vegetarian alternatives to its 145,000 federal prisoners.

Some prisons will offer a separate vegetarian serving line. Others will offer a meatless choice.

At a prison in Pennsylvania, for instance, vegetarian meals consist of cottage cheese for lunch, a peanut butter cup for dinner, and barbecued tofu for dinner. The Bureau says it will offer these due to religious or personal choices of prisoners.
