FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001 Substance abuse and suicide were some of the issues discussed at the start of the 36th annual Alaska Federation of Natives' convention in Alaska on Thursday. Alaska Natives are almost half the substance abuse treatment cases in the state, said AFN. AFN also said suicide rates for Alaska Natives are 274 percent higher than the national average and 117 percent higher than other American Indian. AFN is beginning new programs to attack both. A $15 million Alaska Native Sobriety and Alcohol Control Grant will be distributed around the state to focus on treatment programs. Get the Story:
