THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2002

First Nations leaders on Wednesday expressed hope with the appointment of new Fisheries and Oceans Minister Robert Thibault.

First Nations have had a rocky relationship with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Nations have treaty rights to fish but the DFO has sought to regulate the extent of the rights.

The friction between former Minister Herb Dhaliwal boiled into threats, raids, confrontations and seizure of equipment belonging to Native fishermen.

With Thibault on the job, band leaders now hope they can start a new relationship.
