Cree case questions role of government
JUNE 19, 2000

A claim by the Cree Samson First Nation against the federal government could cost Her Majesty up to $4 billion over mismanaged oil royalities.

The case is landmark not only because it is the largest lawsuit ever filed but for its heavy reliance on testimony by Cree elders regarding the signing of an 1876 treaty.

At issue are the goverment's leases with oil companies that prevented the Samson from receiving fair market value for oil pumped on their land as well as how the government invested money for the tribe.
