Mi'kmaqs lose logging case
A provincial court judge in New Brunswick has ruled against a Mi'kmaq logger. Joshua Bernard, of the Eel Ground First Nation argued that Miramichi treaty rights allow timber harvesting without a license. The judge ruled the historical evidence to support timber trade was insufficient. He was fined $300. Bernard hopes to appeal the ruling all the way to the Supreme Court. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of another native, Donald Marshall Jr, holding that treaty rights allow the Mi'kmaq and Maliseet to engage in commercial hunting and fishing.
