Church tries to welcome abused

NOVEMBER 20, 2000

The United Church of Canada will try to extend a welcome to Natives as a second round of trials over sexual abuse begins next month.

The Church has already been found liable for sexual assualts which occurred at one of their schools in Vancouver. But as the court decides how much compensation the former students are due, the Church wants to welcome them with food and beverages in an attempt to begin the healing.

The Church started the practice of offering lunches last year. Some Natives were apprehensive at first, but eventually the meals became popular.
