OCTOBER 19, 2000

The ongoing move of the Innu First Nation from Davis Inlet to Shango Bay is being questioned by the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs and Innu leaders.

The Department may conduct an audit of the band council. Some $50 million has been transferred to the council as part of the relocation effort.

Innu leaders say the move is behind schedule and over budget because of poor planning from the government. They also say the government isn't addressing problems such as alcoholism and suicide before the community moves.
