Sacred site panel revived

The Bush administration is reviving a federal-tribal task force aimed at protecting sacred sites.

The panel would try to ensure accommodation to federal lands for religious uses by tribes. A number of national monuments, national parks and other federally managed land are former reservations or lands ceded by treaty.

The task force is based on a 1996 executive order signed by former President Bill Clinton. At a forum yesterday in Washington, D.C., Suzan Harjo, who helped work on the document, said she hoped the Bush administration would expand its reach beyond the simple definition of a "site."
