FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2002

The Environmental Protection Agency's senior regulator has quit his post in protest of the Bush administration's effort to "streamline" policies affecting aging power plants.

Eric V. Schaeffer, director of the Office of Regulatory Enforcement, is accusing the White House of trying to weaken regulations in order to play favor with the industry. In his resignation letter, he says companies are refusing to work with the EPA to try and reduce pollution because they have gotten the signal from the Bush administration that enforcement is being cut back.
