Wash. tribe drops dam challenge

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2002

The general council of the Yakama Nation of Washington has voted to stop trying to compete for federal licenses to operate two dams.

The council voted last week against pursuing the licenses for the Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams on the Columbia River. The dams are on land ceded by the tribe in 1855 and which later became the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

The tribe has a treaty-protected right to have a role in the management of fish and wildlife in the ceded area.

The tribe's partner had dropped out of the licensing effort last month.
