Norton welcomes monument recommendation

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2002 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton was in Utah on Monday to meet with state officials to discuss environmental issues. Regarding one, she told The Salt Lake Tribune she welcomed the recommendation to create 620,000-acre national monument out of the San Rafael Swell in southern Utah. She said her department is evaluating the proposal, which is supported by Gov. Mike Leavitt and a number of politicians, except Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah), who has voiced objections.
